// Groningen, 2015-2021
A code club for women in Groningen where they could develop their programming skills. Meetups at inspiring tech companies, open to all levels, always free.
How it worked
GWLC started after a Django Girls workshop day, for women who wanted to keep coding after that one day ended. Meetups at inspiring tech companies across Groningen, open to all levels, always free.
No fixed programme. Work on whatever you want. Coaches available. Always food. Always free.
Women are underrepresented in tech, not because coding is harder for them, but because the threshold to enter a male-dominated field can be unnecessarily high. GWLC offered a space without that noise: informal, safe, focused on learning together.
No experience required. All who identify as women were welcome. The initiative passed from organiser to organiser over six years.
The people
Founded by
Hanneke Laaning, Laura Dijkstra, Liesbeth Bevelander & Arlette Reneman

Second generation
Rosien van Toor & Hillie Kootstra
Took over and kept the community running, organising meetups at Devhouse Spindle, Alledaags and other Groningen tech companies. Grew the community and kept the spirit alive.
Third generation

The final organisers. Continued the work of their predecessors and carried GWLC through to its last meetup in 2021.
